CURRENTS – June/July 2019
Summer is here in South Texas! Our chapter just wrapped up our 2019 Anglers Night Out and Poco Rojo Kids Fishing Tournament last week and had a great turnout on both events.
Our spring Anglers Night Out at Brewster Street Ice House featured two outstanding Texas Saltwater Fishing Legends: Jay Watkins and Cliff Webb. Jay and Cliff talked about the current fishing trends, conservation and some great fishing stories in our Coastal Bend waters. Dr. Kelly Dunning from the University of Texas Marine Science Institute and Jay Gardner from CCA Habitat Today For Fish Tomorrow Committee Chairman started our event off with updates on Coastal and Marine Conservation efforts in South Texas. We had a large crowd of CCA members, volunteers and the general public. We signed up 22 new CCA members!
We had a great turnout for the 2019 CCA Poco Rojo Kids Fishing Tournament—almost 100 kid anglers and sold out! The weather was great and the fishing was spectacular! The CCA Marine Development Center/Hatchery facilities were awesome. We signed up 95 new CCA members!
Flint Hills Resources was our New “Title Sponsor” and we welcomed their volunteers and support! Thanks again to our corporate sponsors: Higginbotham, Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation, Laguna Wealth Services, W. Scott Turner CPA, BBVA Compass, Hilliard Family Foundation of South Texas, Supreme Production Services Inc., Corpus Christi Moms Blog, Roy’s Bait and Tackle, Fishbites and The Bait Bucket.
With our sponsors support, we were able to offer numerous improvements towards our tournament, such as: youth “Jackson” kayak, kids photo booth, more door prizes, larger tent, and quality food services. Flint Hills Resources volunteers provided breakfast tacos for the volunteers and for lunch, Flint Hills Resources volunteers served hot dogs, fajitas, chips, and drinks to the kids, siblings, parents, grandparents and all volunteers.
We could not have hosted two great events without the support from our awesome Board Members and Volunteers. Thank you to: Paul Silva, Tyler Thorsen, Jay Gardner, Michael Mendoza, Valerie Chilton, Dr. Vega, Ashley Fincannon, Courtney Johnstone, Joe Johnstone, Kimberly Prowse, Joseph Briones, Jessica Arroyo, Arron Arroyo, Jim Sutton, Josh Hawley, Tina Johnstone, all of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Hatchery Staff and Flint Hills Resources volunteers-Great job everyone!
