CURRENTS – December/January 2020
Howdy Helotes CCA, the chapter has been very busy. Our banquet fundraiser was another huge success thanks to our members, donors and committee members. However, that’s not all we do…
On September 23 at Bobby J’s, our chapter hosted Mr. John Blaha, CCA Texas Assistant Director and Director of Habitat Today for Fish Tomorrow. Mr. Blaha updated us on current and future projects relating to habitat for CCA. We also had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Chris Bush, founder of The Speckled Truth, as he imparted some of his trophy trout fishing tips and shared some of his love for documenting trout habits which leads to improved opportunities for us to catch them.
On September 28 we held our second annual Kid Fishing Tournament. This time at Paradise Canyon, thanks to a generous donation from the owner who arranged for us to use his beautiful section of the Medina River for our event. In the under 12 category: 1st place Tipton Botello, 2nd place Kaleb Murray, 3rd place Myles DeLaVega. In the under 17 category: 1st place Jacob Aguilar, 2nd place Drew Mahr, 3rd place Sam Murray. Mikinley Gaenzel (6 years old) caught the largest fish and the most fish taking home this year’s Grand Champion award. Congratulations to all our participants and winners! What a great time. If you missed this year’s event, don’t worry, we are already working on next year’s tournament. We want to thank all the volunteers that helped us put on this fun event, CCA Helotes board members, CCA Texas, Chicky Tackle, the home of the Rockport Rattler, Sam’s Club, Paradise Canyon, Judy Mitchell Realtor with Keller Williams Realty and Schott’s Meat Market in Helotes for making sure we had some tasty sausage for lunch.
On October 7 we held elections for our board of officers. Before I fill you in on who’s filling which position, I want to personally thank Bob Mitchell. Our chapter’s very first President, who stepped up to the challenge and did a very fine job leading us and setting the pace for the future. Great job sir!
Our new slate of officers: President – Johnny Rayburg, Vice President/Banquet Chairman – Nathan Lutz, Treasurer – Tyson Gaenzel, Secretary – Judy Mitchell, and we added a new position, The VP of Youth Membership – Sam Murray. Sam is a 16 year old sophomore at O’Connor HS who shares a passion for the outdoors and is excited to bolster our outreach to the younger members of CCA. Welcome aboard Sam.
On November 9, the chapter sent a few volunteers to help the Texas A&M Chapter of CCA do a special beach clean-up of some rookery islands (islands where birds have protected nesting sites) in Rockport, TX. Thank you to the Rayburg Family and Charles and Vicky Sablatura for lending your boats and your time. It’s a rewarding experience to get your hands dirty and actually make a difference personally.
On December 14, the chapter will once again have a float in the Helotes Cowboy Christmas Parade. Kids are welcome to join us on the float (till we reach capacity). More details to follow.
Save the date for our next banquet on March 19, 2020. Once again to be held at the Helotes Ag Activity Building on Leslie Rd. and our monthly meetings are on the first Monday of the month at Bobby J’s at 6:30pm. All are welcome. Remember to take a kid fishing, it will put a smile on their face and yours.
Youth Fishing Tournament
