The latest from CURRENTS

The Port O’Connor chapter has had a vibrant year, keeping habitat and conservation at the forefront of our efforts.

The chapter would like to extend condolences to the family of Bill Moore, our former long-time president, on his recent passing.

We extend heartfelt thanks to Jerry and Brent for hosting our Anglers’ Nights Out (ANO) at the iconic Hurricane Junction in Port O’Connor. Their outstanding hospitality, delicious food, and refreshing drinks make every event memorable. We encourage everyone to dine with them when visiting POC. Our 2025 ANO programs included: January ANO focused on oyster mariculture, with Calhoun County Texas AgriLife Extension Agent Captain RJ Shelly discussing the development of oyster farms in Calhoun County. Brigid Berger updated attendees on the Mid-Coast Sea Turtle Rescue’s vital work protecting local bays during recent freezes. Tom Lempa of Pensacola Oysters shared insights on his Florida oyster farms and plans for a mid-coast operation, delighting attendees by shucking a sack of tasty bivalves. At our February ANO we honored the late Ronnie Luster, “The Crab Man,” for his pioneering role in the annual abandoned crab trap cleanup over 20 years ago. Special guests Lynn and Ronald Luster joined us, while Allan and Brigid Berger from the San Antonio Bay Partnership shared details about the upcoming cleanup. At the March ANO we featured Sam Caldwell and Fred Carr, who reminisced about the early days of CCA and the founding of the Port O’Connor chapter in 2000. Fred shared original banquet programs and vintage GCCA bumper stickers as door prizes. And at our May ANO we included a presentation by CCA Texas STAR Assistant Director Ryan Towns on the Star Tournament, engaging members with updates and excitement for the event.

In April, we celebrated our 25th anniversary fundraising banquet, catered by Malcolm Hein and Sharkies with a delicious steak dinner. The sold-out event equaled our previous gross and net fundraising records. The dedication of our banquet committee and the support of our community made this happen.

We express our deepest gratitude to our major sponsors for making this year’s success possible: The Claire and David deRoode Family, Southerly Fishing, The Olive Street Country Club, Coastline Trailers, Mowdy Boats, Indianola Fishing Marina, Fix Vodka, Texas Liquor, Vaca Jerky, Waterloo Rods, TideRunner Retreat, Pelicano Hot Sauce, and Jeco’s Marine and Tackle.

The Port O’Connor chapter remains committed to conservation and community, and we look forward to another impactful year. Mark your calendar for April 11, 2026 for next year’s banquet. And BOLO for our coming fall ANO’s.
