Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials recently announced that based on current and projected landings estimates, the private recreational angler red snapper season in federal waters off the Texas coast will close at 12:01 a.m., Aug. 2, earlier than the initially projected 97-day season.
ROCKPORT, Texas – July 9, 2019 – Coastal Conservation Association Texas (CCA Texas) and the Building Conservation Trust (BCT), the national habitat program of CCA, have committed $250,000 to support efforts by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Ducks Unlimited to restore Dagger Island and protect important seagrass beds in Redfish Bay.

The 86th legislative session ended Memorial Day weekend with several fishery-related bills sent to Governor Abbott’s desk for his signature. Here is a brief recap of a few measures that will enhance our coastal resources.
On March 20 2019, The Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) Commission adopted a suite of changes to this year’s fishing regulations for spotted seatrout, alligator gar, sharks, cobia and oysters.
The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will hold three public hearings in Texas and a webinar to solicit comments on Draft Amendment 50 – State Management of Recreational Red Snapper. The Council is currently considering state management that would provide flexibility to the Gulf states to set the recreational red snapper fishing season and potentially other management measures, somewhat similar to the 2018-2019 red snapper seasons under the exempted fishing permit.
CCA Texas is opposed TPDES Permit No. WQ0005253000, to authorize the discharge of water treatment wastes at a daily average flow of not to exceed 95,600,000 gallons per day into the Corpus Christi Channel. The Port of Corpus Christi Authority of Nueces County proposes to permit and/or operate a desalination facility on Harbor Island with a discharge in the Corpus Christi Channel across from Port Aransas (see application details). If you enjoyed the 82-day federal-water and 365-day state-water red snapper season in 2018, then you are going to love this. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Coastal Fisheries Division wants to know what days/seasons you would like to fish for red snapper in 2019.
“What do you need to be successful?” That was the question posed in 2013 by Carter Smith, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Executive Director, to hatchery staff. The topic of conversation was TPWD’s efforts to incorporate southern flounder into its stock enhancement program.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has announced that the Texas oyster season will begin on November 1, 2018 and close on April 30, 2019. The following shellfish harvest areas will be closed for the season opener:
